Follow Fridays (57) – Reading Outside of My Comfort Zone

Q: Ever pick up a book from a genre you usually don’t like and LOVE it? Tell us about it and why you picked it up in the first place.

Up until reading The Host, I disliked all sci-fi. I’d never really tried reading any, but I just “knew” I wouldn’t like it. I read The Host: A Novel, which isn’t even a heavy sci-fi book, but it threw me into the genre and made me love it. (Another one…Bex of Kindle Fever convinced me to read a Comfort Food *adult title*…same deal!)

As for why…I’m a reader who is willing to try reading anything/genre at least once. I’m pretty brave when it comes to reading. If someone recommends it to me and stands behind it, I’ll likely attempt to read it. (I’m known for going into a library or store and grabbing something random without knowing anything about it in various genres too. I also do this for music. ;) ) I’m not so adventurous when it comes to books for review, but in my free time – everything is game!

That’s the second time I’ve seen The Host tonight! I definitely need to pick it up. It’s not exactly a genre hopper for me, but I’m pretty sure it’s my kind of read! New follower hopping through!

  2. I loved The Host, too! I like sci-fi though. I’ve never heard of the other one, but I love the cover. I’ll have to check it out for sure! Happy Friday :)

  3. I’m not a big sci-fi fan either, but I just read a book called Mothership about a school for pregnant teenagers that’s in space. It was hilarious and really entertaining. I’ve been throwing this book at every I know since I’ve read it!

  4. I’m very bad with reading other genres… like super bad. If I do not like a genre it’s hard to convince me to read it. But I’m getting better and trusting other peoples recommendations much more!

    Happy Friday!

It really did get off to a slow start, I think a big part was how confusing it is at first…now whenever I re-read it I’m hooked from page 1.

I keep telling people to sit down and keep trying to read it. The beginning is tough, but once you get into it…it gets better and better! Thanks for stopping by.

I had the same experience with The Host. First of all I didn’t want to read because Twilight was such a hype this book was certainly going to let me down (Boy, was I wrong) and than the sci-fi thing, nope not for me. But then a friend said she really liked it and that I should definitely read it, so I gave it a shot and loved it! Although it didn’t get me into reading sci-fi ;) New NB follower.

I was the same, I kept thinking “a book about aliens…?” But I’m the friend who ends up always having to try first…no one else will. ;) Then I get to push them on everyone else.

I have not read The Host yet, but I actually have the book.

I’m a new twitter follower – couldn’t find any GFC or linky, but that’s OK.

I loved the Host too…but then I do like SciFi:) I try to be daring and explore different genres but there are some I can’t help but avoid

It’s always kind of scary! I’ve read a bit of everything…I always just tell myself if I can’t make it far in, it’s not a big deal. But I hate leaving things incomplete. ;)

  14. I am the same. When someone says ‘it’s really good, try this one!” I most likely will read it as soon as possible :p (if it sounds like something I could like) I always like to find out new things :) But The host was a book I just couldn’t get through..

I figure if someone likes it, there has to be a reason! (Although, sometimes I just wonder what they were thinking…)

Awww, how far did you get into it? If you didn’t make it past the first 2-3 chapters..I urge you to give it another try. I know the beginning turns people off, once you get into the “story” it’s better.

  15. The Host is one of my all time favorite books! It was hard to get into but once I did, I fell in love with it. Glad you gave it a chance!

I always go “Ok, give it a try…try to get past the first 5 chapters.” ;) Everyone I know gives up after the first couple…sniff!

I’ll be checking your blog out, but thanks for stopping by and welcome to blogging. :)

  16. It’s awesome that you’re brave about different genres! I try to aim to be like that too, and yes, I agree. If had to choose a least-favourite genre (not hate), it’d be sci-fi. Great answer!
