A Long, Long Sleep by Anna Sheehan
Rosalinda Fitzroy has been asleep for sixty-two years when she is woken by a kiss.

Locked away in the chemically induced slumber of a stasis tube in a forgotten sub-basement, sixteen-year-old Rose slept straight through the Dark Times that killed millions and utterly changed the world she knew. Now her parents and her first love are long dead, and Rose — hailed upon her awakening as the long-lost heir to an interplanetary empire — is thrust alone into a future in which she is viewed as either a freak or a threat.

Desperate to put the past behind her and adapt to her new world, Rose finds herself drawn to the boy who kissed her awake, hoping that he can help her to start fresh. But when a deadly danger jeopardizes her fragile new existance, Rose must face the ghosts of her past with open eyes — or be left without any future at all.

This is sci-fi along the lines of Across the Universe, I Was a Teenage Popsicle, or The Host. I’m personally not a typical fan of sci-fi, but in this book like those others, the sci-fi kind of takes a back-seat and is more driven by the story and characters.

When I felt the “Sleeping Beauty” theme coming along, I was expecting a futuristic retelling of it, I was pleasantly surprised. While holding the basic Sleeping Beauty story-line and a few cute references here and there, it was completely different.

Rose was thrown into a world she was unfamiliar with, I was kind of surprised she wasn’t more shocked about the way things had progressed. It was the future after all, a few things she questioned. It almost seems as if not much had changed in 62 years, but I find that hard to believe. Bren and Otto are amazing friends. I loved Otto, who is a “freak” too. Bren seemingly accepts Rose as a friend, trying to help her acclimate. I feel for Rose, she’s lost everyone and has never easily been able to make friends, so she is pretty much alone aside from her two new friends.

A Long, Long Sleep has a bit of everything- romance, mystery, and action. It kept me thoroughly entertained. I can’t wait to read more from Anna Sheehan.

You can check A Long, Long Sleep out for yourself on August 9th. I received my review copy from the publisher, Candlewick, in exchange for my honest review.
