I’ve always been a huge fan of Meg Cabot. Her last book fell a bit short, in my opinion, but what author doesn’t have a dud eventually? I really hoped for the best with Abandon…the premise sounded amazing. The cover…absolutely stunning. The beginning drew me in, it was creepy and fascinating. While it wasn’t horrible, I didn’t really love it.
The main character was annoying, I felt like she whined a lot. While I know she has learning disabilities, some of her comments about mythology being unimportant and asking who Homer was, really grated on my nerves. I do have to admit I loved John from early on, I just wish there was more of him.
The story itself, while having a few plot holes, for the average reader they could likely be overlooked. Abandon has a very creative storyline, and I feel the next book in the series could possibly redeem the first if done correctly. I’ll definitely be picking up the second book when it comes out just so I can see if it improves and because I’m very curious to see what happens next.
