The Soulkeepers by G.P. Ching

The night sexy and mysterious Abigail Silva comes to Jacob Lau’s bedroom window, he doesn’t believe she’s real let alone a supernatural force who lives just across the street. Abigail says she’s his Helper sent to train him as a Soulkeeper, a gifted warrior responsible for protecting human souls. But Abigail has secrets, and as Jacob is pulled into her strange world, he learns those secrets could cost him his family, his girlfriend, and even his soul.

I wasn’t all too sure what to expect from The Soulkeepers, I tried to avoid reading any reviews with it prior, because I wanted to be surprised about what I was getting into. The synopsis, while it hints at things left a lot to my imagination.

The first line is simply magnificent – “Death lived up to Jacob’s expectations.” It grabbed me attention and won me over immediately. Throughout the book there are hints leading up to what is really going on. Usually I can unravel the story, but only as things were revealled did I realize a certain character or event was a clue along the way. The surprises keep coming up to the last page!

Jacob is a stubborn, protective teen who will stop at nothing to find his missing mother. Malini is adorable, I can’t wait for book two to find out just what her involvment is in this whole thing. John, Jacob’s uncle, is just questionable enough to make me wonder what his motive is throughout the book. Gideon, Abigail’s cat, is brilliant. I feel silly, but I’m always drawn to the animals in books! He really is special, though.

Religion plays a big part in The Soulkeepers, but it’s never comes across as preachy. Ching’s portrayal of small town bigotry is spot-on, sadly. Mind you, not all small towns are like that and bigots can and do live anywhere, but it was very realistic. The supernatural world, is stunning. It’s horrific, but at the same time it’s so fascinating!

There are plenty of hints of the great things to come in the next book, so I’m really excited about it! Letters Inside Out will be a stop on the book tour for book two, Weaving Destiny. So, keep your eyes open for that! The author sent The Soulkeepers to me so that I could read it beforehand. This in no way affected my review.
