Tessa Masterson Will Go to Prom

Lucas and Tessa’s friendship is the stuff of legend in their small Midwestern town. So it’s no surprise when Lucas finally realizes his feelings for Tessa are more than friendship and he asks her to prom. What no one expected, especially Lucas, was for Tessa to come out as a lesbian instead of accepting his heartfelt invitation. Humiliated and confused, Lucas also feels betrayed that his best friend kept such an important secret from him.

What’s worse is Tessa’s decision to wear a tastefully tailored tuxedo to escort her female crush, sparking a firestorm of controversy. Lucas must decide if he should stand on the sidelines or if he should stand by his friend to make sure that Tessa Masterson will go to prom.

Authors Emily Franklin & Brendan Halpin team up once again with the adorably, charming and slightly necessary Tessa Masterson Will Go to Prom. You may recognize their names from Jenna & Jonah’s Fauxmance, which was SUCH an adorable romantic contemporary.

Told in alternating POVs, Tessa Masterson opens up with Tessa giving us a hint of what is to come, one that left me a bit curious and had me instantly hooked. Luke, on the other hand, is in love with his best friend – Tessa. (Want a teaser from Luke’s POV? Check out my TT from his first chapter.) As you can tell from the synopsis, Luke’s plan doesn’t quite work out as he’d hoped.

In Tessa Masterson, we follow each storyline as the debate as to whether or not GLBT students should be allowed to go to prom. Yep, it’s based on a true story. Franklin and Halpin manage to take a situation that is pretty unfortunate and make it into a fun, yet informative story that will hopefully help GLBT individuals AND open the eyes of everyone. Everything balances out nicely, the humor and seriousness, so that it never really comes across as preachy.

Both Tessa and Luke have completely different personalities and I love them both equally. I will say, Luke’s chapters were my favorite! He’s such a fun character and it was great to see him grow as Tessa Masterson went on.

I loved Tessa Masterson Will Go To Prom and feel like it would benefit most YA-readers and entertain all contemporary fans.
