Second Life: Meet Amanda’s Geeky Side

Lately, I’ve been attempting to come up with post ideas that aren’t necessarily books. I love reviews and bookish things, but sometimes that gets mundane…plus I’ve not been in a reading mood – GASP! Instead, I’ve been wasting a bit of time with one of my earlier obsessions, Second Life. At the risk of sounding like an advertisement, I thought some of you might like to see just what it is! In the past I’ve mentioned it in interviews and on the blog, but I’ve never really explained fully.

If you aren’t sure what Second Life is, imagine this entire online “world” with different “sims”/worlds created by other users. Fancy being a vampire? Visiting the Eiffel Tower? Killing zombies? Being a zombie? You can do all that and more. Think “The Sims” only..it’s you. It’s like the name says a “second life”. One of the fun parts is some users create these sims based on books!

I decided I’d take a little field trip and I went around to a few and snapped pictures of some of the highlights. I only visited ones that are YA-safe, but you can also find series’ like True Blood also have “homes” in Second Life. (I also found bloggers, authors, and publishers who have info booths/stores!)

Diagon Alley/Harry Potter : Sure, I haven’t read the HP books, but what field trip wouldn’t be complete for readers without a stop to there? It used to be more massive and it’s my understanding they are rebuilding it. I checked out Diagon Alley and found books AND butter beer. (Pictures 1 and 3)

Bookstacks:  This place has readings, book club meetings, and more! (Picture 2)

Missing Mile: This has always been one of my favorite places on SL! It’s from the Poppy Z. Brite series. It’s an RP/residential area, but it’s so much fun to walk around and explore. I’m always finding something new. (Picture 5 and 6)

If you want to check them out AND more, you’ll need to download Second Life. (It’s free to join.) Joined and want to look me up? My name in-game is Alice Mavinelli.

And here’s a “bonus” picture so you can see me up close! ;) Joined by Rhia/Preet of A Written Rhapsody.

This entire post was from me! All sims I visited are owned by various Second Life members – I created nothing (aside from the pretty pictures).

  1. Amanda… don’t tempt me with this. I want to try this so bad, but I KNOW that I’ll get sucked in. *sigh*

It’s SUPER addicting, Christy! It’s hard to make myself balance blogging and “playing”. But I think it’s fun… ;) If anything to go explore!

I don’t think I understand the “game” aspect. What do you do in these virtual worlds?

    • Amanda says:

You can really do…anything! There are mini-games or you just “live” a life and goof off. You can play board games, for example. There’s gambling, “vampire”/”lycan” game/RP systems, there’s shooting-type games…basically anything you can imagine. :)

I’m tempted to try it out but afraid to get hooked….about two years ago I was so hooked on Farmville it was insane!

        • Amanda says:

Haha! That’s the biggest problem for me. I get to playing “just for a minute” and realize a couple of hours have gone by. It completely kind of..takes over. It’s fun though.
